Passes near Durango experiencing wintry conditions

Coal Bank, Molas requiring snow tires, chains or four-wheel drive
La Plata County snowplows ready for the next storm within the La Plata County Fleet Maintenance shop on South Camino Del Rio last week. Snowstorms hit the passes in the area overnight Tuesday, and another storm is expected to move through the area Friday.

At 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Transportation said passenger vehicles must have snow tires, chains or four-wheel drive vehicles to go over Coal Bank and Molas passes.

Both passes on U.S. Highway 550 north of Purgatory Resort were reporting snow falling with icy and snow-packed roads.

An alert for restrictions on Red Mountain Pass between Silverton and Ouray, which was reporting similar conditions, went out 20 minutes later.

Wolf Creek Pass on U.S. Highway 160 between Pagosa Springs also reported icy and snow-packed roads.

The National Weather Service predicted that snow would continue to fall at times overnight, so before drivers head out Wednesday morning, they should check www.cotrip.org for current road conditions.

Another storm is expected to move through the area starting Thursday night, with an 80 percent chance of rain and snow in town Friday and Friday night.
