Patriotism protects debate, dissent, diverse views

Mike Sigman labeling the Herald “anti-American” (Letters, Herald, Sept. 10) because it reports on immigration, racial justice or restorative justice is pretty much what I’d expect to hear from him. When I was in school, I was taught that the press questioning power is one of the most American traditions we have. Silencing news you dislike is undermines democracy.

I’m sure Mr. Sigman, and those who agree with him, can find plenty of media outlets that give them the perspective they like. Most likely they aren’t paying subscribers to the Herald anyway. I’m sure most of us have gone into homes with the constant drone of Fox News in the background.

Patriotism isn’t demanding blind loyalty to President Donald Trump, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or demanding that the news reflect only approved opinions. To me, patriotism means protecting debate, dissent and diverse perspectives. That’s what the Herald is doing. They always seem to make room for Mr. Sigman’s views.
