Thank you to the Durango Herald for recognizing the important animal protection work that is done by the La Plata County Humane Society (Dec. 11).
I would also like to acknowledge the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store. The mission of the thrift store is to “provide an ongoing revenue source for the animals served by the shelter while serving the people of the communities of La Plata County.”
Generous donations made by community members are sorted and new inventory is put out daily to help provide the needed revenue. The store is also an incredible local resource that provides vouchers on a routine basis to non-profits and community organizations, including the Volunteers of America Community Shelter and Safehouse, Southwest Center for Independence, Alternative Horizons, Women’s Resource Center, Hill Top House, Durango School District 9-R, Project Merry Christmas, La Plata County Department of Human Services, Axis Health System, and the La Plata Family Center Coalition.
Vouchers provide those in need with clothing and household items. In addition, the store donates sleeping bags to Manna Soup Kitchen. Assistance was also given to families impacted by the Lightner Creek Fire.
Books are donated to Durango Book Rescue which provides free books to the community. The thrift store also offers opportunities for individuals to complete mandated community service hours.
The La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store is a true example of a local business that benefits our whole community. Your patronage of this gem is always appreciated.
