Paying more in local taxes makes sense

I urge Durango voters to vote YES on 2A.

Others have made important arguments for the benefits of this tax increase. Rather than reiterate those arguments, I hope to persuade those who generally oppose paying more taxes on principle.

While I understand a reluctance to send vast amounts of one’s hard-earned money to the feds or even to the state government for projects that do not directly benefit our area, I don’t understand the logic in starving our own local government.

Unless one believes that our city government is very bloated and needs to be starved more than it has been, or that we have no local needs, to vote against this measure would surely not be in any of our self-interests.

It costs money to run a city and ours is growing in population and expectations, like it or not.

If each of us pays a mere five additional dollars each month in city taxes, we can get some long overdue maintenance and improvements to our city streets and police force/station.

As our town grows, demands on infrastructure and public service agencies naturally increase. Who but the citizens of Durango should pay for this? The argument for local control is reasonable. It is understood that control and responsibility go hand in hand. Let’s take responsibility for our own safety. Vote YES on 2A.
