Pedestrian hit by car in City Market parking lot in critical but stable condition

Driver tells authorities he mistook gas pedal for brakes

A 73-year-old Durango man is in critical but stable condition after being struck by a vehicle in the south City Market parking lot earlier this week.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said the driver – identified as Robert Morris, 87, of Durango – was shopping Monday morning at City Market, 6 Town Plaza.

After he was done shopping, Morris got into his 2010 Subaru Forester and mistook the gas pedal for the brake, pressed down and accelerated out of the parking spot at a high rate of speed, Shupe said.

The car then struck a pedestrian, identified as Michael McGuffey. The car then hit three other vehicles before coming to a stop.

The crash occurred about 9:40 a.m.

McGuffey was seriously injured, Shupe said, and was ultimately taken by helicopter to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. Shupe said he is in critical but stable condition.

The three other vehicles struck sustained moderate to severe damages, Shupe said.

Morris was cited with careless driving causing injury. Shupe said drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the crash.
