Fort Lewis College invites community members ages 55 and older to attend classes free of charge as part of its Community Learners Program.

This is the second year the program is being offered, said Elizabeth Bussian, director of engagement and giving at the college.

“This program was started last year through the President’s Office,” she said. “It is a great way for us to bring the community to campus and into the classroom.”

Admission into classes is at the discretion of each professor, and participants agree to attend all classes during the semester, arrive on time and not disrupt the class.

“We had one person sit in a course last semester. She became a valuable contributor to the class, but was careful not to dominate the class,” Bussian said. “She had an amazing experience.”

Interested participants are encouraged to register for fall and spring courses at least one week before the semester starts and no later than one week after classes have started.

If space is available in the classroom after census day, community learners are invited to attend the class.

There is no limit to how many courses someone can attend, Bussian said. Community learners have access to all class coursework, but are not graded and do not take exams. They also do not receive credit for the classes.

Bussian said there is growing interest in the program.

“Anyone 55 and older who is interested is invited,” she said. “We love to have a diverse audience in the classroom.”
