SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – A brief look at the opening round Thursday of the PGA Championship:

LEADING: Jimmy Walker matched his best score in a major with a 5-under 65.

CHASING: Martin Kaymer, Emiliano Grillo and Ross Fisher were at 66.

LOOMING: British Open champion Henrik Stenson birdied three of his last seven holes for a 67. He can become the first player since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win two straight majors at age 40.

FALLING: U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson opened with a 77, his worst score to par in the opening round of a major since Turnberry in the 2009 British Open.

BALTUSROL COMPARISONS: The average score was 71.69. In the 2005 PGA at Baltusrol, the average score in the opening round was 72.69.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Kaymer hit a 35-yard bunker shot to 3 feet on No. 8, his 17th hole, to save par.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY: Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA champion who spends most of his time as a Sky Sports commentator, opened with a 69.

CLUB PROS: Rob Labritz had a 71, the low score among the 20 club pros at Baltusrol.

NOTEWORTHY: Of the 35 rounds under par, 25 were in the morning.

QUOTEWORTY: “My wife and I were just joking, ‘Hey, you’ve already won two majors. You just happened to win on the right golf courses in the wrong year.” – James Hahn after opening with a 67. His two PGA Tour victories were at Riviera, which hosted the 1995 PGA Championship, and Quail Hollow, which hosts the PGA next year.
