This picture taken in 1921, might seem to validate Durango’s previous history of using bump-outs downtown. That may be the case, or possibly this picture documents booths set up on Main Avenue for a celebration, perhaps the Fourth of July. Either way, using the street for conducting business is not a new idea in Durango. The businesses shown here in the 800 and 900 blocks include J.C. Penney, Taylor Raymond Jewelry, Parson’s Drugs, Burns National Bank, Richey’s Candy and the Darling Brothers building.

Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org
