Photo: Dance party

No one can say Fort Lewis College students do not know how to have fun. This picture was taken around 1916 on the old FLC campus, then a high school, near Hesperus. Coeds are seen celebrating May Day with a Maypole dance. It must have been a tough ticket to get as evidenced by the standing-room-only crowd of onlookers along the balcony. Always professional, the dancers seem to be doing a good job of hiding their enthusiasm as they perform. The first recorded May 1 Maypole dance ritual took place in America in 1628. By tradition, Maypoles were signs that the happy season of warmth and comfort had returned. After this last winter, maybe this dance should be revived?

Ed Horvat for The Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org
