The fire service was a little different 115 years ago. In this picture, taken inside the firehouse at 134 E. 10th St., the firemen relax between calls. From left to right, they are: William Croke, Henry Dietrich (chief), John Conway, Sam Ethridge and Martin Miller (standing). The horse on the left is Mac and the one on the right is Tige. The horse-drawn fire wagon can be seen in the center of the picture just beyond the fire crew facing the front doors that open to 10th Street.

Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org
