Photo: Ice rescue training

Nate Baier, right, fire captain with Durango Fire Protection District, helps Zach Bertrand, a firefighter/EMT, during an ice rescue training exercise Monday at Turner Lake, near the entrance to Falls Creek Ranch subdivision north of Durango. As part of the scenario, firefighters and EMTs were told a fisherman had fallen into his own fishing hole and had been stuck for about 30 minutes. He was reportedly alone, other than having a pet, which in this scenario was played by a stuffed walrus. The training exercise was conducted a dozen times this week, allowing numerous volunteers and employees to take part. The fire department thanked the Falls Creek HOA for allowing it to train on the lake. (Shane Benjamin/Durango Herald)
