Photo: Ignacio parade

This picture, taken looking north in Ignacio, was probably made in 1918 or 1919. The building to the left, the Aspaas General Store, shows burn marks around the windows. It burned in 1917. Adjacent to it was a bank that escaped mostly undamaged. Today, Wells Fargo Bank is located in the building, though the exterior looks much different. The rider is likely a World War I veteran and the women are carrying American flags with another U.S. flag prominent in the background. The Ignacio Garage building on the right still exists and is located at the southeast corner of Goddard Avenue and Ute Street. The picture is captioned “Ute Indian Parade.” Read more about local history at durangoherald.com/westishistory.

Ed Horvat for The Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org
