The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks basketball teams will wear turquoise jerseys provided by Nike during the men’s and women’s home openers Wednesday night against Northern New Mexico.
Tickets to the games cost only $1 for high school students. There will be special presentations from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Colorado Guard and Native American performances at halftime of both games. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m., and the men will follow.
This is the second year FLC has been selected to participate in the Nike N7 Games to honor Native American Heritage Month. FLC is one of only 11 schools selected to participate in the program.
“We want to be a strategic partner with Nike N7 to help inspire and enable Native American youth to pursue healthy, active and more successful lives through participation in sports,” FLC athletic director Barney Hinkle said.
The other Nike N7 schools include Florida State, Haskell Indian Nations University, Marquette, Mesa Community College, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, San Diego State and Stanford.
Nike’s N7 Fund began in 2009 and supports sports and physical activity programs in Native American and Aboriginal communities and has contributed $5.6 million to 243 communities and organizations to reach more than 420,000 youths.
