This picture of the Durango Wheel Club was taken by photographer Frank Gonner on June 16, 1895, at Bakers Bridge, 13 miles north of Durango. The original bridge was built in 1861, about 100 yards upriver from this bridge. Charles H. Baker, who had discovered gold in the San Juan Mountains the previous year, led the building of the original bridge. Scenes from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” were filmed near here, including the movie’s classic jump by Butch and The Kid into the Animas River to escape the approaching posse.
