Work has begun on Hermosa Meadows Road north of Durango to bring it up to La Plata County standards to become a public road. About 10 miles north of Durango, it runs east off U.S. Highway 550 and accesses private homes as well as Animas Valley Elementary School, which is the only district school without access from a public road. The project is expected to cost $500,000 and is being funded by Durango School District 9-R, private homeowners and neighboring homeowners associations. District spokeswoman Julie Popp said Durango 9-R contributed $350,000 to the project. After improvements and an inspection, the county will assume maintenance of the road, said county spokeswoman Megan Graham. The project is expected to be complete in August.
