Colorado Parks and Wildlife held its second of three scheduled kokanee salmon giveaway days at Lake Nighthorse on Friday. An estimated 100 people showed up with a valid 2021 fishing license to claim about 5,000 kokanee salmon that had been spawned this week by CPW. The next giveaway will take place at 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the lake. Participants must bring their own container. Kokanee are a landlocked Pacific sockeye salmon that naturally die after spawning. So far this year, CPW has recovered 2 million kokanee eggs during spawning operations at Lake Nighthorse, more than anywhere else this year in the state. The eggs are sent to the Durango Fish Hatchery, where they are raised until the fish are stocked at reservoirs in the region next spring. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
