Photos: Reading the green

Golfers play on dry patchy grass Tuesday at Hillcrest Golf Club. The course and other large water users cut their water use after a 30-inch raw water line was damaged in late June. Micheal McCloskey, Hillcrest general manager/director of golf, said the course is like U.S. Open conditions, firm and fast. He said course superintendent Will Herz has been masterful in using limited water supplies to keep the course in great shape. “We manage every gallon of water prioritizing the greens, tees and fairways” Herz said. “With the high temperatures we’ve had, we’re on our knees waiting for rain.” The course’s full water allotment was returned Saturday, but it takes time to bring the grass back, he said.
