Piedra Vista wins in 4 at BHS

Bayfield drops first Homecoming Week battle

It's doubtful any other volleyball team could have been as attractive an opponent to be scheduled for one of Bayfield High School's most spirited times of the year as Piedra Vista.

"You know, I want them to enjoy Homecoming Week. And I want them to really enjoy that pride for their school," BHS head coach Danica Frost had said, after the Wolverines' back-to-back sweeps of Monte Vista and Pagosa Springs last Saturday.

"PV is our big, exciting weeknight match-a Saturday match is fun, but there's nothing like that Tuesday night.home crowd."

As loud and proud as the rooters may have roared, they went home much quieter as the Panthers returned to Farmington on the winning side of a 26-24, 17-25, 25-14, 25-18 result. They were defeated 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 10-15 by 4A Santa Fe St. Michael's last Saturday with fifth place in the Santa Fe Tournament of Champions' Gold bracket at stake.

PVHS improved to a reported 4-5 overall prior to beginning NMAA District 1-6A action next Friday in Albuquerque at Cibola, while the Wolverines-slated to visit Jerry A. Conner Fieldhouse on Oct. 3 for the interstate rematch-dipped to 6-3.

Neither Frost nor Piedra Vista's Ron Becker had reported any individual statistics by press time.

Still 3-0 in the 3A Intermountain, Bayfield resumes league work tomorrow when Alamosa (4-3, 1-2 IML) comes to town a week removed from sweeping Montezuma-Cortez at home.

On Saturday, the Bayfield girls powered through a 25-12, 25-8, 25-6 demolition of MVHS and a trickier 25-18, 25-19, 25-16 takedown of PSHS.
