The Pine River Senior Center is a community resource. It's not just for really old people. Unfortunately, that seems to be a fairly common impression. The primary function of the center is to provide a gathering place for older adults, without defining what constitutes "older."
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays for games and socializing, bring your own lunch; and on Wednesdays and Fridays for activities and meals. Volunteer helpers are essential to keep things running smoothly.
We have hot lunches on Wednesdays and Fridays through La Plata County Senior Services. There are $4 suggested donations for age 60 and above, or $7 for under 60. Some regular attendees are at the younger end of the age range, along with some in their 80s and 90s. Summer visitors and newer residents are always welcome and encouraged to attend. Please call 884-5415 by 9 a.m. of the lunch day to reserve a meal.
There is concern that low attendance, especially on Wednesdays, could jeopardize our days of operation. Some people we have invited have said our events are just for the elderly, and we're not old. Come for lunch anyway. We have a good thing here, and we want to keep it going strong.
