Durangoans took a polar plunge in the Animas River Saturday to help purchase a van for a U.S. Army veteran who has multiple sclerosis.
The official Polar Bear Plunge for Charity was canceled because of the deep and slippery snow along the banks of the river, said organizer Andrew Lindbloom. The event sponsored by Bart’s Deli and Brennan Oil is held annually to help raise money for those with MS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
This year, the event was planned to benefit his friend Nikki Meade, who lives in Indiana and set up a GoFundMe campaign for a $60,000 van.
Madison Upton helped promote the event on Facebook and led the charge into the Animas, despite the official cancellation. The small group raised $110.
“The most brave showed up and dressed up,” she said.
Lindbloom may hold the official plunge next Saturday morning at the 32nd Street put-in. Those interested can call 769-9531.
