Police find 2 missing kids taken from La Plata County

Hughes

Two La Plata County children were found safe Saturday night, hours after the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children issued an Amber Alert for Kiarah Hughes, 5, and Brooklyn Hughes, 3, whose mother had abducted them earlier in the day, according the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrested the children’s mother, Kallisha Hughes, about 9:30 p.m. in Alto, New Mexico. She was being held in La Plata County Jail on Saturday night on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, burglary and violation of a restraining order.

The children were unharmed and were placed with authorities until they can be returned to family members in Colorado, according to La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender.

Kallisha Hughes recently lost her parental rights, and the children’s father was arrested earlier this week for violating a restraining order, according to a news release.

According to the Amber Alert, the suspect took the children from the home of their aunt and legal guardian in Durango West I about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to law enforcement, the suspect has an extensive criminal history, violent tendencies and is a frequent methamphetamine abuser. She also may go by an alias of Kallisha Henneberger.
