Police investigate shooting between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs

U.S. Highway 160 reopens after 14 hours near Piedra River

An Archuleta County man says he shot and killed an intruder who attacked him with a knife Wednesday night in a remote area between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was assisting the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the shooting death. The CBI did not respond to an email or phone calls Thursday seeking comment.

U.S. Highway 160 was closed for about 14½ hours from about 11 p.m. Wednesday to 1:30 p.m. Thursday near the Piedra River. Traffic in both directions was rerouted on Archuleta County Road 175, which runs parallel to Highway 160.

According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported at 10:47 p.m. by a man who said he shot an intruder on his neighbor’s property. The man said the intruder attacked him with a knife when he approached him to question him about his identity and the reason for his visit to the property, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased man and set up a perimeter, which included part of U.S. Highway 160. The scene was preserved overnight until the CBI arrived to conduct an investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release names of the shooter or the shooting victim.
