COMMERCE CITY – Police are urging adults to keep their weapons in a secure place after a 3-year-old boy was shot to death in a suburban Denver home.
Commerce City officers were called to a neighborhood just west of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal on Thursday afternoon on a report of a gunshot and found the child dead. The toddler’s two older brothers, ages 12 and 13, were in the home at the time of the shooting and were not injured.
No adults were at the home.
Police Cmdr. Charlie Schoepflin said in a news release it appears the shooting was “the result of the mishandling of a loaded firearm.” He did not say who was handling the gun and did not release any other information.
Schoepflin did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment Friday.
