The Durango Police Department is reminding residents to lock their car doors after about a dozen thefts were reported last month in the Crestview neighborhood in west Durango.

At least eight cars were burglarized Jan. 18 and four vehicles were broken into Jan. 25, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe. The thefts occurred on Crestview Drive, Delwood Avenue, Highland Avenue, Bacus Avenue, Columbine Drive and San Juan Drive, he said.

Some cars were parked on the street, others were parked in driveways, Shupe said. The one thing they all had in common was they were all left unlocked, he said.

“None of these vehicles were secured,” he said.

Items stolen included cash, purses, gift cards, sunglasses and, in two cases, firearms, Shupe said.

“We had a couple of vehicles that were just rifled through. They didn’t have anything taken out of them, but their stuff was just strewn about,” he said.

Anyone who may have seen someone checking car doors or walking through neighborhoods late at night is asked to call Crimestoppers at 247-1112 or Detective Bryan Heaton at 375-4734.

“The big thing is just remember to lock your vehicles,” Shupe said. “Even if you lock them, you want to take things inside that are of value.”
