Police: Suspect killed after firing at officers in Monument

MONUMENT – A person was shot and killed after running from a crashed car after a pursuit, attempting to carjack a vehicle and then firing at least one shot at law enforcement officers after entering a home on Saturday, Colorado Springs police said.

The shooting happened after Colorado State Patrol troopers tried to stop the person on southbound Interstate 25 in response to a menacing report near Larkspur at around 5 p.m. but the driver crashed into a guardrail after getting off the highway. The person unsuccessfully tried to carjack a nearby vehicle and then pointed a gun at the troopers before entering a house in Monument, said Colorado Springs police, which is investigating the shooting. Troopers and deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office went to the house where police said the suspect fired at least one round at them causing one deputy and one trooper to fire back.

The people in the home were able to escape and no one else was injured, police said.
