We were in Durango from Page, Ariz., house-hunting, but have cancelled that reason for being here, and our frequent past visits will be much less so in the future.
Many of us are aware that the public is intentionally not being given all the disastrous details about the contamination of the Animas. Heavy metals such as cadmium, zinc, and mercury all have very serious potential effects – not only immediately, but lasting for decades – on our health and well-being and that of our children, grandchildren ad infinitum. If everyone were alerted to the true effects, what would happen to Durango: a major downturn in tourism and a glut of homes on the market at – oh, no – reasonable prices so anyone who still wants to live here wouldn’t have to wait until they are reincarnated, bringing with them some gold from the streets in heaven to afford something.
Maybe we also need to pray for our river, for the ability to forgive the incompetence, negligence and inadequate follow-up of EPA/government officials and our hopes for a future administration which will attempt to prevent, or at least deal with, such catastrophes after the fact instead of spending $150 billion to irresponsibly bribe other countries and hope beyond hope that they will not destroy the earth with their nuclear contaminants.
