Poor shooting, but a shot at a W

Skyhawks overcome 29-percent shooting to beat Texas Woman’s

The rims haven’t been kind to FLC in Texas.

Poor shooting across the board, however, did not keep the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team from its second win of the season.

The Skyhawks shot 29.2 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from the free throw line but held on to beat Texas Woman’s University 52-49 on Saturday in Stephenville, Texas, in the TexAnn Tipoff Classic.

“It was definitely a defensive battle, and the good part is it wasn’t pretty, and we still won on the road,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said.

FLC shot 41 percent from the floor and 57 percent from the free throw line in an 81-62 loss to host Tarleton State on Friday.

FLC led 49-41 with 4 minutes, 14 seconds remaining Saturday, but the Skyhawks needed two free throws from Ashley Kuchar with 11 seconds left to seal the win.

Kuchar finished with 13 points, while Erika Richards led FLC with 14.

Mary Brinton also had 13 points and was the only Skyhawk to shoot better than 50 percent from the field.

Texas Woman’s outrebounded the Skyhawks 50-44, but 12 of the Skyhawks’ rebounds were on the offensive end, leading to nine second-chance points.

FLC forced 29 turnovers that led to 18 points and picked up 10 fast-break points.

The Skyhawks’ defense held the Pioneers to 30.2-percent shooting and made 13 steals.

“There were times where we felt we could pull away a little bit, but we didn’t have a knockout punch, and so we’re definitely still a work in progress,” Flores said.

“Our ceiling is higher than what we played this game, but again, it’s a win, and it’s a region win, so you can never be unhappy about that,” Flores said.
