Portico a revered tradition manifested

Thanks to Jackson Clark for his Feb. 26 letter to the editor. The members of the Durango Design Review Board obviously are unaware of an artistic tradition often referred to as Santa Fe Style. (See: Mather, Christine and Woods, Sharon, Santa Fe Style New York: Rizzoli International Publications, 1986.)

Most Southwestern art aficionados see this tradition as a synthesis of Spanish, Native American and contemporary art traditions.

The tradition is manifest in the works of Georgia O’Keeffe and in some of the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The veranda/portico of Francisco’s is partially a manifestation of this revered tradition.

The Durango Design Review Board should heed the following: “Sometimes it is better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt!”
