Southbound traffic at the 18th Street and the Main Avenue intersection will be limited to one lane until mid- to late next week because of a water line repair.

Justin Elkins, Durango utilities manager, said Saturday that city crews are performing a valve repair at 18th Street and Main Avenue. He said the valve on a 4-inch water line was old and in need of repair.

Repairs should be completed on Monday, he said. But, because Main Avenue and Camino del Rio are composed of concrete and are technically a Colorado Department of Transportation highway, the city is repairing the road back to CDOT’s standards, which will take until Wednesday or Thursday.

Elkins said drivers should be aware of the area and slow down upon approach because the single open southbound lane is a tight squeeze given the location of the valve under the road being repaired.

“Eighteen-wheelers are fitting through there fine, so everybody with their trucks and trailers enjoying their weekend should be fine to fit through that space,” he said.
