There are plenty of fish in the sea – and on Tinder. But what do you do if you’re not getting tons of bites?
If you’re a guy, you might reel in more matches with an image of yourself fishing.
According to a survey of more than 1,000 members of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, conducted by FishBrain (an app and social network for anglers), about half of women found profile photos of men holding fish were more attractive than those without. The FishBrain study used Tinder profile photos of Florida men, ages 18 to 35, while the women were in their late teens and early 20s.
But not just any fish will do.
In the survey, the women who considered a man with a fish attractive were then presented with 10 images of men with their catches – and the great northern tilefish came out on top, deemed the “hottest catch.” They’re stunning, iridescent creatures – and apparently, a pretty fish can make the person holding it look pretty good, too.
The second most-popular fish was the sailfish, which the FishBrain study calls “lean, powerful and independent” and the “marine embodiment of grace and virility.”
The least attractive fish, on the other hand, was the common carp. In online dating, you want to stand out and be anything but common.
“A diminutive young common carp is unlikely to help woo a woman,” the study found, “suggesting that, in the aquatic world at least, perhaps size does matter.”
Notably, the study did not include pictures of men with catfish.
