Recreational marijuana users have another holiday to celebrate other than 4/20: Wednesday’s one-day tax holiday.
The proposition that legalized marijuana included a quirk that is linked to the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, which will trigger a repeal on the 10 percent state sales tax and 15 percent excise tax on recreational pot to the joy of dispensaries and smokers and to the chagrin of state government officials.
At Santé Alternative Wellness, owners are turning the tax break into an opportunity for an all-out celebration.
The dispensary will offer 10 percent off all purchases on top of the repealed sales tax, and hold its weekly “Wheel Wednesday,” where customers can win free prizes.
“It’s a big event, and we’re hoping for a lot (of customers),” said office administrator Kim Watts. “It gives our customers an opportunity to shop without having to pay the additional 10 percent retail sales, on top of the other taxes they normally pay.”
State officials, on the other hand, are not reveling in the chance to buy marijuana at discount price – at least not openly.
Officials estimate a $3 million to $4 million loss in collected sales-tax revenues because of the holiday.
