Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center in Ignacio will host pottery classes for adults with artist and longtime member and board member of Dancing Spirit Margie Coates from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Friday, Jan. 17, at the center, 115 Ute St. The classes will run for nine weeks.
Learn hand-building with clay through pinch, coil and slab construction. Students will also be introduced to the potter’s wheel, for beginning and intermediate students. Basic throwing skills will be taught, as well as design and decorative techniques for functional pottery forms. Students’ individual interests and skills will drive the class. All levels are welcome.
The tuition of $170 for nine weeks and includes $35 materials fee, which covers the cost of one bag of stoneware, glazes and 2,000 cubic inches of glaze firing. Students provide their own tools. All work fired at Dancing Spirit must be produced in the Pottery Program studios (no outside work allowed).
Students may also access the classroom on Tuesday mornings during the Pottery Studio class, and as arranged with Kasey for practice, for $15 a session.
