The entire town of Silverton lost power for nearly five hours Thursday.
Alex Shelley, spokesman for the San Miguel Power Association, said all 692 meters in Silverton lost power around 11 a.m. Crews were able to fix the problem and restore power just before 4 p.m.
Shelley said the issue originated at a substation along County Road 2. Crews replaced the fuse and got the system up and running. It was unclear what caused the outage, he said.
The problem was fixed in the nick of time: The National Weather Service said the overnight low in Silverton was expected to dip as low as 2 degrees. Shelley said residents should always be prepared for spending the night without power.
“We do the very best we can, but electricity is not a guarantee,” he said. “People should be prepared for outages, particularly in the high country. Otherwise, our crews won’t stop until the problem is resolved.”
