The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Bayfield High School football team after last Friday’s loss at Western League-leading Gunnison.
Olathe (5-2, 5-0 WL) is tied atop the standings with the Gunnison Cowboys and is bringing its physical brand of football at 7 p.m. Friday to Wolverine Country Stadium.
“We’re preparing for a very well-coached, athletic, hard-hitting physical team that’s used to winning and has confidence to win,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said Thursday. “They feel they’re the top of the league right now, and they deserve it.”
The Olathe Pirates have won their last five games and have scored more than 28 points in every game. They’re also 2-1 on the road with wins at Aspen and Grand Valley.
BHS (4-3, 3-2 WL) hasn’t lost at home yet, but the Wolverines need to bounce back after dropping last week’s 7-0 decision in Gunnison.
“We had a great week of practice. We’ve responded real well,” Heide said. “We expect it to be a battle just like last Friday. We have to make two or three big plays that change the outcome of the game.”
Zane Phelps has made those plays most of the season for BHS. He leads the team with 789 yards rushing on 162 carries and seven touchdowns, while also catching 14 balls for 162 yards and two touchdowns, all of which lead the Wolverines.
“He’s been the type of runner where other teams have to key on him,” Heide said. “It’s up to our other athletes to take advantage of that.”
