Powerhouse to open Sept. 19

Plaza currently open; trivia test on Aug. 20
No young, budding scientists have been at play at the Powerhouse Science Center since May 9. The board of directors announced this week that a reopening date has been set for Sept. 19. However, free science exploration activities will be available on the Powerhouse Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays through August.

After a summer of rebooting, the Powerhouse Science Center has scheduled an opening date of Sept. 19.

The center, which had tentatively planned to reopen Sept. 1, has to address some compliance issues first, board President Kathleen O’Connor said.

The Powerhouse closed May 9 after the board realized how fragile the nonprofit’s financial situation was. The board and a number of volunteers have spent the summer opening up the historic building’s power-generation equipment for display and redesigning its programming and business plan.

In the meantime, parents looking for some end-of-the-summer exploration for their children can stop by the Powerhouse Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays for free science activities.

The board is also bringing back a test outing of the Powerhouse’s popular Trivia Night with Brett Cadwell at 6 p.m. Aug. 20.

“Help the ‘powers-that-be’ decide if Trivia Night is something we should do every month? Every week? Every spring and summer?” the board said. “We want your input.”
