Precipitation is expected to linger in Southwest Colorado through Tuesday, bringing snow to the high county and rain to the lower elevations around Durango.
Andrew Lyons, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said a storm system is expected to linger over the region until Tuesday afternoon.
During that time, elevations above 7,500 feet could see anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow, with higher elevations above 10,000 feet possibly accumulating upwards of a foot of new snow.
But in town, where there’s a 60 to 70 percent of precipitation on Monday, it’s likely to remain rain, as high temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s, Lyons said.
“If temperatures drop early in the morning (Monday), you could see a mix of rain-snow or maybe even some light snow accumulation,” Lyons said. “But that changes as temperatures rise in the afternoon.”
Lyons said Wednesday and Thursday should be clear days as the storm system moves east. He said Friday another system starts to move over Southwest Colorado, with Saturday looking like the best chance for more precipitation.
“We’ve had this trend where we’ll see a few days of active weather, then a break, a few more days of active weather, then another break,” Lyons said. “That’ll continue for the next week or so.”
As of Sunday evening, Purgatory Resort reported 3 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. Wolf Creek Ski area reported 6 new inches.
