‘Predatory developer exploiting community’

Last weekend, the Animas Valley Action Coalition met to discuss the immense problems with the proposed Roberts RV and camper park at Trimble Lane. There was standing room only.

The proposed project includes 306 spaces for “luxury” camper vans, large RVs and even “tiny home” cabins which Scott Roberts, the developer, plans to sell. This constitutes a full-on subdivision requiring a detailed planning review process.

It appears that the planning staff was hoodwinked into accepting that the project was merely an RV park, which requires only a minimal planning review. The project is much more than that. But it was questionably given conceptual approval by three of our county planning commissioners.

It’s the job of the Planning Commission and the county commissioners to look out for the interest of the people in our community, not some out-of-town developer. It’s their job to look beyond whether a project meets technical criteria such as water, sewer, roads or zoning. The real question for commissioners is whether the project is good for our community. Clearly it is not.

Who will this monster project serve? We don’t need any more rich people moving here, changing our sense of community with their big city ideals and their political views. We don’t need more rich out-of-towners, competing for housing with longtime residents who can now barely afford to live here.

This project is nothing more than a predatory developer from out-of-state exploiting our community for personal gain.

When is enough . . .enough?
