The first and third quarters spelled trouble that the Bayfield High School boys basketball team couldn’t recover from Monday night in Blanding, Utah.
Nasty weekend weather forced the Wolverines into a Monday night matchup with San Juan High School, and BHS took awhile to get going. Bayfield had flashes of brilliance, and dominated at times, but couldn’t sustain the success as the Wolverines lost the non-conference matchup 61-49.
Keyon Prior had 15 points to lead the Wolverines.
“We just didn’t get off to a good start on either side of the ball,” Bayfield head coach Jeff Lehnus said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We found a rhythm in the second, though, and started playing our kind of basketball.”
Bayfield took awhile to get going and was outscored 18-6 in the opening quarter. However, the Wolverines showed their claws in the second quarter behind a 10-point effort by Hayden Farmer. Bayfield didn’t just catch up after the first-quarter lull, they dominated the 10-minute frame outscoring the hosts 23-8 to take a 29-26 lead into halftime.
The Broncos (6-1) turned the tables in the third quarter with a 19-2 run that gave them a 14-point advantage.
“It was almost like a repeat of the first,” Lehnus said. “They just never let us close the gap after that for a chance to tie it back up.”
Bayfield (3-3) rallied to get it back to within four points inside five minutes left, but some tough calls that didn’t go their way and foul trouble hurt the Wolverines down the stretch.
Farmer finished with 10 points, while Ryan Phelps was held to six.
Girls Basketball
Girls BasketballThe Broncos’ and Wolverines’ girls basketball teams went back-and-forth Monday, but Bayfield just couldn’t pull it out in the end.
BHS (1-5) led 18-13 after one quarter behind hot perimeter shooting from Savannah Kaufmann and Chloe Weybright. Kaufmann’s eight first-quarter points and Weybright’s four first-half 3-pointers gave the Wolverines a seven-point edge at the half.
BHS carried a six-point lead into the final quarter, but the Broncos (3-3) fought back. The home team scored the first six points of the final quarter before Bayfield grabbed the six-point advantage back with two minutes left. The Broncos scored the game’s final eight points as BHS struggled to convert at the foul line.
Weybright’s 12 points led the team. Courtney Bayles, Kaufmann and Jordan Lanning each finished with eight points for Bayfield.
