The Bayfield High School boys soccer team defeated Bloomfield 4-0 on senior day at Wolverine Country Stadium Saturday afternoon behind two goals from senior forward Mattia DiBello.

The Wolverines got their first win since Sept. 11 against Pagosa Springs, and ended a month-long, eight game losing streak.

DiBello got hot early and scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match. His first goal came in the second minute and was unassisted. DiBello struck again just eight minutes later in the 10th minute, as freshman forward Aiden Waddell delivered a ball and DiBello was able to put it away, to give Bayfield an early 2-0 lead.

The Wolverines (2-12, 1-4 3A Intermountain League) continued to control possession in the second half, and junior forward Lorenz Wilburn gave BHS a 3-0 lead as he scored in the first minute of the second half. Senior midfielder Dylan Doskocil added the icing on the cake, and converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to make it 4-0. Senior goalkeeper Bailee Blakeslee had five saves in the win.

The Wolverines will end their season against Alamosa next Saturday. The kickoff time has yet to be determined.

Durango 1, Grand Junction 1, OT

The Durango High school boys soccer team could not find a game-winning goal Saturday afternoon and tied Grand Junction 1-1 after extra time.

The Demons, ranked No. 2 in the latest Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A coaches poll, and No. 3 according to RPI, went down early, when Matias Campoy scored the game’s opening goal in the 17th minute for Grand Junction. The Tigers (7-4-2, 5-2-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) continued to control the pace of play for most of the first half, and led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, Durango picked up the play and were able to find the equalizer with 20 minutes remaining. In the 60th minute, Lance Townsend crossed in a ball to the box and Leland Heinicke was on the end of it to put it away. The teams were level at one heading into the overtime period.

Durango (12-1-1. 6-0-1 SWL) had two golden opportunities to win it in the extra periods, but failed to do so. In the first overtime, Townsend had an opportunity that went wide, and in the second period, senior forward and team captain Logan Fullington had the best chance of the night. He beat the goalkeeper on a 1-v-1 situation, but his shot went over the crossbar. The match finished level at one.

Head coach Aaron Champenoy said despite chances, it was not enough to get a road victory.

“After we made some adjustments at halftime, I thought we played much better,” Champenoy said. “We fixed some things up on defense, and we played more of our style. And, despite Will (Lammons) and Ren (Beasley) not being available, some other guys stepped up, but it was not good enough to get the road win.”

Freshman goalkeeper Levi Larson finished with 11 saves, but most were fairly comfortable, as the shots came from distance.

It was the first time that the Demons had not won since Sept. 7, when they lost 4-2 to Evergreen. However, it was not all bad for Durango, as the Demons clinched an outright Southwestern League championship.

“I’m glad for the league championship, but we still know there’s more work to do,” Champenoy said. “I think the guys were a little dissapointed knowing we had some chances to win. It was a little bit of a wake up call, and we’re going to have to play a more complete game against Fruita on Friday.”

The Demons will end their regular season at 3 p.m. Friday against Fruita Monument at Fruita Monument High School.
