Jonas Nanaeto’s kick with 400 meters remaining was enough for the Bayfield cross-country team to edge out Ouray Friday afternoon at the Delta Sweitzer Lake Invitational at Sweitzer Lake Park, recording 59 points while Ouray at 61.
Nanaeto finished in fourth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 24.66 seconds. His teammate Elco Garcia raced with Nanaeto for much of the race but could not keep up with Nanaeto’s kick, taking sixth with a time of 17:35.11. Jaden Evans of Telluride won the race with a time of 16:21.31. Four out of six Wolverines finished with all-time personal best records, while another had a season best and it was enough for Bayfield to get a victory.
Rounding out the results for Bayfield included Zeb Shields took 13th with a time of 18:29.91. Meanwhile, Rylan Ross finished 17th with a tine of 18:53.95, Xander Hovenstine crossed the finish line in 27th with a time of 20:12.50 and James Chenowith was not far behind with a time of 20:23.49 in 29th.
The Wolverines will race at the Ancient Trails Invitational hosted by Montezuma-Cortez, Friday Oct. 5.
The Durango volleyball team went 1-1 Friday at the Battle Mountain Tournament, defeating Vail Christian 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15 and fell to Alamosa 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16.
Durango (5-8, 2-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) will play Summit County at 10 a.m. Saturday.
