The Bayfield Wolverines stormed from behind to tie the game at halftime, then carried that momentum in the second half to pick up a road win to end the regular season.
Ryan Phelps scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Bayfield boys basketball team secure a 66-57 win at Montezuma-Cortez.
The win improved the Wolverines’ record to 13-6 overall and 9-1 in the 3A Intermountain League. BHS finished in a tie for the league title with Alamosa, but the Mean Moose earned the tiebreaker via head-to-head points by 13.
“Co-league champs for the first time since Dion Phelps did it, I believe,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “It was a great job to finish this crucial stretch of three games in seven days.”
Hayden Farmer had 11 points for BHS in the win, while Brian Mashak and Keyon Prior each had eight. Lehnus also credited the play of bench stars Carl Heide, Turner Kennedy and McKay Wells, especially for their defensive effort. Kennedy also hit a big 3-pointer before the end of the first half.
Phelps battled foul trouble but avoided picking up a fifth during his big fourth quarter.
Bayfield’s girls also won Tuesday night, 50-32. Kyle Baker had a phenomenal game with 15 points for the BHS girls. Jordan Lanning added 11, all in the fourth quarter. Jade Sanders and Chloe Weybright each had seven points.
The win improved the BHS record to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the IML.
The league tournaments will begin next week, with BHS hosting the semifinals and finals next Friday and Saturday.
Girls Basketball
Girls BasketballIgnacio scheduled a pair of non-classification games late in the season hoping to have its team battle tested come time for postseason play. After seeing a very good Durango team last week and coming up just short, the Bobcats turned their attention this week to a Pagosa Springs team with state championship aspirations.
After trailing by only five points at halftime, IHS was outscored 19-5 in the third quarter and saw the game slip away to the Pirates, 46-24.
Only four Bobcats scored in Tuesday night’s road game against Class 3A No. 7 Pagosa (15-3, 8-2 3A Intermountain League). The unranked Class 2A Bobcats (11-6, 8-1 San Juan Basin League) were led by senior Avionne Gomez’s 11 points. Freshman Morgan Herrera added nine points and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
“We had a pretty darn good first half,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “Then they went on a run and opening things up and got us into foul trouble.”
Pagosa Springs was missing a few players because of illness, but steady forward Morgan Lewis scored a game-high 15 points.
“Right now we need to get more players scoring the ball,” Seibel said. “We have two league games coming up and then districts next week. Playing a top team later in the season like this really helps me as a coach figure out what we need to improve on, and right now it’s going back to the drawing board to get more girls scoring.”
IHS will host Mancos at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for senior night.
