Eager for a solid win ahead of a Saturday rematch with Alamosa, the Bayfield High School girls soccer team took care of business Friday at Montezuma-Cortez.
Savannah Kaufmann scored two goals in the game’s first 11 minutes, Misty Helton added the next two goals before Kaufmann scored her third to complete a hat trick in the second half. Sophie Turner capped off the Wolverines’ 6-0 win with a 75th-minute goal Friday in Cortez.
“With the way the conditions have been – windy, snowing a bit, crazy – we wanted to win the first 10 minutes, and they went out and did it,” BHS head coach Jen Moore said. “Savannah got those first two early, and that was big.”
Lana McKee kept a clean sheet in goal for the Wolverines with two saves. The Panthers (2-9, 0-8 3A Region 5) had one strong chance in the 67th minute when sophomore Mckenzy Howerton had a free kick opportunity. She hit a shot underneath the BHS wall, but the ball bounced off the post and away from goal.
BHS (4-5, 2-2 3A Region 5) was strong on attack all day, but 16 saves from Montezuma-Cortez goalkeeper Ayanna Silas prevented the Wolverines from a mercy-rule win.
The Wolverines scored three goals in each half. Moore was pleased with the execution, as the team had all week to prepare after two one-goal losses to Pagosa Springs and Alamosa in inclement wind conditions the previous week.
“Alamosa is what we’ve been preparing for,” Moore said. “I didn’t know what to expect without having played Cortez yet, but all week we worked to improve on things from last week’s Alamosa game. Everything we worked on in practice, we saw it in the game. I hope we can bring that to Alamosa.”
Kickoff between BHS and Alamosa (8-1, 3-0 3A Region 5) is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in Alamosa.
