Prep Roundup: Bayfield, Ignacio baseball teams pick up big wins

Herreras strong at plate for Bobcats

Bayfield’s bats couldn’t be silenced after a 17-run fifth inning in its first game of a Class 3A Intermountain League opening doubleheader at Pagosa Springs.

Bayfield High School’s baseball team picked up wins of 19-2 and 11-1 on Tuesday against the Pirates (5-3, 0-2 IML).

In Game 1, the Wolverines held a 2-0 lead after two innings and maintained that lead until the fifth. The Pirates tacked on two of their own in the fifth, but the game would end 19-2.

In Game 2, the Wolverines (6-4, 2-0 IML) scored in the final five of six innings played to secure the 10-1 win.

In the opening game, Hub Brandon went 3-for-4 at the plate with one home run, five runs batted in and three runs scored. Rhett Hoover was 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Alec Demko added two RBIs and two runs on a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with two doubles. Jake Brandon, Kaleb Heck and Max McGhehey all drove in one run and scored twice.

Ethan Morris scored three times and was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Hayden Farmer also scored twice and drove in a run while going 2-for-3 with a double.

Farmer pitched four innings to earn the win. He allowed only one hit and struck out eight against no walks. McGhehey pitched one inning in relief. He allowed two hits and two runs. He struck out one and didn’t walk a batter.

In Game 2, The Wolverines scored three runs in the second and four in the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead. They added two in the fourth and one in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Morris had a big game at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and an astounding triple he drove to the opposite way to right center field. He had two RBIs and three runs scored. Farmer scored four times in the game, as he went 2-for-4.

Demko had another three RBIs and two runs scored, as he went 2-for-3. McGhehey also had two RBIs while he went 1-for-4.

Michael Gettman went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Brandon started the second game and earned the win on the mound. He threw four innings of one-run ball. He struck out five, walked one and allowed one earned run. Andrew Morgan pitched the final two innings and faced the minimum six batters. He didn’t allow a hit, struck out one and didn’t issue a walk.

After nine road games to open the season, the Wolverines will have their home opener with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday against Montezuma-Cortez (2-3, 1-1 IML).

Ignacio 7, Dove Creek 5

Ian Weinrich pitched himself out of a jam, and a big day at the plate for the Bobcats helped Ignacio hang on to a 7-5 home win Tuesday against Dove Creek.

Joe Herrera went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple. He scored twice and had an RBI to help the Bobcats (4-5, 2-1 2A District 3/5) to their second win of the season against the Bulldogs (4-5, 0-1).

Kai Roubideaux was the winning pitcher for IHS, as the Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to leave him as the pitcher of record. Roubideaux pitched five innings. He allowed six hits, four runs and three walks while he struck out six.

Weinrich got himself in a bit of trouble in the fifth inning, as he hit a batter to load the bases with one out. But he struck out the next two Dove Creek hitters he faced to come away unscathed.

He pitched two innings and struck out five. He allowed three hits and one run.

Trace Lovelace was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Roubideaux helped his cause by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nate Herrera, the team’s catcher who hit leadoff, went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Cole McCaw was 1-for-3 with two runs, and Marcus Chapman went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Derek Kibel pitched four innings for Dove Creek. He allowed six runs on six hits, one walk and he struck out two.

Ty Smith pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out two.

Hayden Gray was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for Dove Creek. JD Dennison went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Next on the schedule for Ignacio is a 1 p.m. Friday home game against Nucla (3-5).
