Prep Roundup: Bayfield soccer no match for Pagosa Springs

Early flurry sends Pagosa past Bayfield

A deflection cost Bayfield early, but Pagosa Springs made sure there was nothing fluke about Tuesday’s result.

The Pagosa Springs High School girls soccer team scored twice in the first 12 minutes of a home game Tuesday to defeat the Bayfield Wolverines.

Alyssa Lewis blasted a crossing pass that hit the backside of a Bayfield defender and redirected into the goal in the fourth minute. Eight minutes later, Hayley Mitchell scored when she got on the end of a crossing pass from Hannah Marnocha. The Pirates (7-2, 4-0 3A Intermountain League) carried a 2-0 lead into halftime before scoring another three goals in the span of 10 minutes early in the second half.

Alanah Gallegos capitalized on a second-chance volley opportunity and scored from inside the 18-yard box to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute. In the 66th, Lewis scored her second goal of the match on a perfectly-placed header on a crossing pass from Mitchell.

Sarah Ross put the finishing touches on the win when she scored in the 69th minute. She made the most of a scrum in front of goal.

BHS wouldn’t go without a fight. Savannah Kaufmann had a left-footed opportunity that was saved by Diana Scott in the 71st minute. Kaufmann blasted another shot moments later, but it was blocked by a defender in front of goal.

Caibri Schaefer also had a look at the net, but Scott scooped it up to keep a shutout.

The young Wolverines, who have battled injury all year, will be back on the field at 4 p.m. Friday at Alamosa.
