Bayfield High School’s volleyball team made a statement to the rest of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Class 3A Intermountain League on Saturday.
The Wolverines hosted Centauri and Montezuma-Cortez in their first glimpse of league opponents this year, and didn’t lose a game in either match as Bayfield cruised to a 2-0 day.
BHS beat Centauri 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 and disposed of the Panthers 25-20, 25-16, 25-17.
“I am pleased with the progression of our passing game,” Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz said. “It continues to serve us well, keeping us in system for first kill opportunities.”
Maddi Foutz had 12 kills and 10 digs to lead the Wolverines against Centauri. Courtney Bayles racked up a team-high 23 assists. Emily Bauer led the home team with 19 digs and Ashley Mottin added eight kills.
The host BHS team was just as sharp against Montezuma-Cortez.
Maddi Foutz and Jade Pascale combined for 18 kills to lead the attack, but Kylee McCoy was especially impressive to Coach Foutz.
“McCoy alternates between two positions regularly,” Foutz said. “She’s developing a strong net game.”
Bayfield (5-2, 2-0 IML) will look to keep the solid play going with a 4 p.m. match Tuesday at Farmington’s Piedra Vista High School.
Girls Volleyball
Girls VolleyballSaturday was a big step in the right direction for the Durango High School girls volleyball team.
The Demons went all the way to Denver to take on some high-quality 5A talent at the Cherry Creek Tournament, and did a lot more than just held their own.
Durango went 3-1 on the day beating Prairie View (13-25, 25-23, 15-11), Heritage (25-18, 25-11) and Horizon (25-12, 25-19).
The only loss the Demons took on the day was to tournament runner-up Rocky Mountain. Durango’s Lana Razma was named to the All-Tournament team.
“The girls really brought it today and it was exciting because it was our last hurrah before league starts,” Durango head coach Colleen Vogt said. “We just ran a fast offense and our setters did great job spreading the net. Ally Snow and Lana Razma led us in kills from outside all day. Ivy Kirwan and Lauren Biery did a great job in the back row. Faith Dowling and Josie Surmeier were incredible in the middle blocking. I couldn’t be happier with their effort.”
Durango (4-4) will host Fruita at 7 p.m. Friday to open league play.
Boys Soccer
Boys SoccerTeams on the Western Slope have known how good Durango’s boys soccer team is for a few years now, but teams on the other side of the state are starting to get a sense of the Demons’ talent, too.
One week after going on the road to beat defending CHSAA 4A state champion Evergreen High School, the Demons went to Aurora and delivered the first loss of the season to Overland. Durango used two goals from Elijah Fenton to beat the previously undefeated Trailblazers 4-1.
Leifdon Pratchett also added a goal for the Demons, who added one more on an own goal by Overland. The only goal allowed by DHS was a penalty kick that beat goalkeeper Trey Furnas.
Pratchett’s free kick goal got the scoring started for Durango early.
“It was a rocket from about 32-35 yards out,” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said of Pratchett’s strike. “We got it to 3-0, but the penalty was something we created with a foul.”
Juan Tejada’s assist set up Fenton for the second goal, and the junior wasn’t finished.
“The keeper tried to come out, but Eli just beat him to the ball and put it in an open goal,” Parker said.
Durango (5-1, 1-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) will try to extend the winning streak to four at 5 p.m. Friday on the road at Grand Junction Central. The Demons will have to recover quickly as they’re are scheduled to play Grand Junction at 11 a.m. Saturday.
