The Bayfield High School volleyball team fought hard, but came up short against Alamosa in a key 3A Intermountain League clash Saturday afternoon at Alamosa High School.

The Wolverines (8-3, 4-1 3A Intermountain League) lost in four sets, 18-25, 20-25, 26-24 and 20-25.

Mavis Edwards recorded a triple-double in the match with 15 kills, 14 digs and 13 assists. Lana McKee had 26 digs, while Annie Fusco had 10 kills and Meghan Youngblood recorded 31 assists.

In the first set, Bayfield took a 13-9 lead early on, but the Mean Moose (12-1, 4-1 IML) proved their worth, as they stormed back to take the opening set. Jordan Mobbley ended the opening set with a kill from the back row.

In the second set, it was back-and-forth until the Mean Moose pulled away late. In Set 3, the Wolverines had to rally out of an initial 7-1 hole to tie the match. Later in the set, the Mean Moose were going for a three-set sweep up 22-20, when Edwards smashed home a kill to make it 22-21, which followed more back-and-forth action. Edwards tied the match at 23 with another kill, and Fusco put the set away with back-to-back points, a tip shot, and then a kill down the middle.

In Set 4, the Wolverines would get no closer than 16-14. After a last-gasp effort at 23-19, the Mean Moose were able to put Bayfield away three points later.

“(Bayfield) played strong today, out-blocking Alamosa, tallying 8.5 blocks,” said BHS head coach Terene Foutz. “We ware very well matched, yet BHS had just enough unforced errors to disrupt our effort. Mavis and Annie put out strong offensive performacnes, and Lana McKee was outstanding on defense, and serve-receive. It was a good loss, and we look forward to our next opportunity.” The Wolverines will travel to Durango High School (6-2, 2-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ignacio High School

The Ignacio High School volleyball team finished third at the Simla Tournament on Saturday in Simla.

The Bobcats (6-5, 2-3 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) split pool play, as they beat Soroco in four sets, 25-12, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-23. In the second match against the tournament hosts, Simla, the Bobcats fell in straight sets, 16-25, 15-25 and 20-25.

The tournament then was broken into two brackets, between the top two teams in the pool. Kit Carson edged Simla for the tournament, while the Bobcats squared off against Hoehne of Trinidad for the third-place match.

Ignacio edged the Farmers (5-8, 4-4 2A Santa Fe League) in five sets, 25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 18-25 and 15-7 in the fifth set.

“I was really pleased with the way we finished the day,” said IHS head coach Thad Cano. “We had some lineup changes coming into the tournament, but it turned out OK. The girls rebounded after a tough week, and I think we’re back firing again.”

The Bobcats will travel to Dove Creek (9-1, 2-1 SJBL) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Tennis

Durango High School

TennisThe Durango High School tennis team went 1-3 this weekend in Southwestern League duals against Grand Junction and Grand Junction Central High Schools Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction.

On Friday, Durango split the day, after the Demons beat Grand Junction Central 5-2 on Friday, but lost 2-5 on Saturday. In Saturday’s match against the Warriors, there were five tiebreakers, including a double tiebreaker with Aedan Hall and Kai Skowlund, but the doubles team came out on the wrong end of it. Elias Fiddler played tough at No. 1 singles, but he too lost his matches on Saturday.

Against Grand Junction High School, the Demons lost 2-5 on Friday, but was much closer Saturday, as they narrowly lost 3-4.

“I’m super proud of the way we fought this weekend,” said DHS head coach Todd Jolley. “We just need to work on pushing our net game a bit more, and play more relaxed. When we’re able to do that, they play so much better. Still, I like where we are at heading into regionals, and with some practice, I know the boys will be up for it.”

DHS will have two weeks to prepare for the Class 4A Region 8 tournament Oct. 11 in Grand Junction.
