The Bayfield High School volleyball team fought back to defeat Pagosa Springs Tuesday night in Bayfield in four sets, and won 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18.
After falling in the first set, Bayfield’s front line took over as the Wolverines had eight blocks on the night.
Senior outside hitter Jannika Pope recorded the Wolverines’ first double-double of the season as she registered 16 kills and 10 digs in the win. Junior libero Lana McKee led the back court with 25 digs. Annie Fusco, a freshman middle hitter, recorded nine kills and had the highest attack efficiency on the team with .412 percent.
Head coach Terene Foutz thought Fusco had the breakout performance of the night.
“Annie was awesome tonight and did not look, feel or play like a freshman,” Foutz said. “She is developing quickly, and will be a key competitor for Bayfield in future seasons.”
The Wolverines (4-9, 3-3 4A Intermountain League) had a complete team performance, according to Foutz.
“The team worked well together tonight on block,” Foutz said. “Our pins set the blocks well, and our middle hitters closed gaps well tonight. As a result, more attacks went toward our libero.”
Bayfield will host a triangular meet on Saturday when they will square off against Montezuma-Cortez and Centauri in Intermountain League play. The Wolverines will face Montezuma-Cortez at 10 a.m. followed by Centauri at 3 p.m.

After the Bluejays took the first set 25-20, Mancos (5-6, 4-2 San Juan Basin League) could not overcome Ignacio’s front line and servers.
