The Bayfield volleyball team did something the program had never done Saturday.
The Wolverines went 4-0 to win the Palmer Ridge High School volleyball tournament for the first time ever.
Bayfield beat Palmer Ridge 2-0, Poudre 2-1 and Air Academy 3-0 to set up a final match with 5A powerhouse Coronado (16-7).
The Wolverines took the first game of the championship match 25-23 before stealing Game 2 31-29. With the match and the title on the line, Bayfield sent a message to the rest of the state with a 25-12 championship-winning final set that gives the Wolverines some serious momentum heading into the CHSAA 3A playoffs.
“I just loved the way we battled especially in a knockdown dragout final against Coronado,” Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz said. “We don’t like to look forward to anything past the next match, we just want to play every point as well as we can and the kids have been doing that.”
Bayfield (20-3, 10-0 3A IML) will learn its postseason fate when seedings are announced on Monday for the 3A state tournament.
“I hope we’re rewarded for what we did here (Saturday),” Foutz said. “I think we deserve to be in the top three. This was a huge win for us, so I hope the selection committee will recognize that and seed us accordingly.”
