Prep Roundup: Durango baseball blasts Battle Mountain in doubleheader

Ignacio splits with Meeker, Rangely

The Durango High School baseball team put on a hitting clinic against Battle Mountain.

The Demons piled up 29 total hits during the doubleheader Saturday to pick up wins of 10-1 and 16-0 at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards.

Gage Mestas had a huge day for the Demons, as the freshman went a combined 3-for-5 with two doubles, one run batted in, two walks, five stolen bases and six runs scored.

In the 10-1 victory in Game 1, Durango (4-2) racked up 12 hits and took advantage of five errors from Battle Mountain (0-7). Eight of the 10 runs were earned.

Jayse Baruch went 3-for-4 in the game with a triple and three RBIs. Luke Napier went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, and Dawson Marcum was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and a stolen base. Gavin Mestas added an RBI double in the win.

Fynn Hyson got the win for the Demons on the mound in Game 1. The sophomore pitched six complete innings, struck out 10 batters against one walk, allowed four hits and the one run was earned. Tre’von Martinez closed the game and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

In Game 2, only six of the Demons’ 16 runs were earned, as the Huskies struggled in the field with seven errors.

Durango recorded seven doubles in the game.

Kegan D’Aleo had two doubles and went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and scored three runs. Ryan Genualdi, Gavin Mestas, Cody Nightingale and Michael Vidunas provided RBI doubles in the game. Gage Mestas provided the other double.

Genualdi and Quelan Mestas drove in two runs each, while Max Hyson went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and Al Hurworth was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Marcum, Martinez and Dylan Ridgway drove in one run each.

Gavin Mestas earned the win in the second game, as the senior pitched five innings. He struck out nine batters against no walks and allowed only two hits. Martinez pitched the final two innings. He gave up two hits, walked three batters and struck out three.

Durango will host Aztec (5-9) for the Demons’ home opener at 3 p.m. Tuesday at DHS. The Demons beat the Tigers 6-5 on March 15 in Aztec.

Ignacio High School

Ignacio split a pair of games Saturday, as the Bobcats fell to Meeker 7-6, then bounced back with a 17-5 victory against Rangely to open 2A District 3/5 League play. Both games were played in Rangely.

Against Meeker (2-1, 2-0 2A District 3/5), the Bobcats trailed 7-3 through five innings but cut into the deficit with three runs in the sixth before the Cowboys held on for the win.

The Bobcats (3-5, 1-1 2A District 3/5) recorded 11 hits in the game, with Joe Herrera, Trace Lovelace, Cole McCaw and Lawrence Toledo getting two hits each.

Five of Ignacio’s six runs were earned, and Meeker committed four errors in the game.

Pitching and fielding stats for the Bobcats were not available.

In the lopsided win against Rangely (0-5, 0-2 2A District 3/5), Ignacio piled up 14 hits and took advantage of nine errors by the Panthers. Nine of their 17 runs were earned.

Bryce Finn led the Bobcats with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. Lovelace, McCaw and Kruz Pardo added two hits and an RBI each. Marcus Chapman dove in four runs and had a triple, and Cesar Pedregon added two RBIs with a double for the Bobcats.

Pardo got the win on the mound, as the senior pitched five complete innings, allowed two hits, walked two batters and struck out 10. Two of the five Rangely runs were earned.

Ignacio will host Dove Creek (4-4) at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
