The Durango High School girls basketball team pulled off the shocker of its season, as it got a 34-30 win on the road against Montrose, the eighth-ranked ranked team in Class 4A, on Friday night.
Emma Fitzgerald scored seven of her eight points in the fourth quarter, as the Demons (8-12, 1-5 5A/4A Southwestern League) held the Indians to just seven points in the frame after the Demons had held them scoreless in the second, as well.
“I was so proud of our effort tonight,” said DHS head coach Tim Fizpatrick. “Our defensive effort was phenomenal. We rebounded the ball a lot better this time, and it was just a really solid team effort. We asked them to do what they had to on defense, and they really stepped up.”
Last time the teams met, Montrose won 35-29 on Jan. 19 in Durango.
Tayler Dossey led the Demons on Friday with nine points, while Maddy McManus and Fitzgerald had eight each. The Indians (17-4, 4-2 SWL) were led by Josie Eccher who finished with eight points.
Durango will stay on the road for a noon tipoff Saturday at Grand Junction Central High School.
The Bayfield High School girls basketball team picked up a convincing road win Friday night at Monte Vista, as the Wolverines won 47-27.
BHS (5-10, 2-6 3A Intermountain League) was led by Tymbree Florian, who had 12 points. Macee Shultz had 10 points, while Maddy Oltmanns had nine points.
“It was a pretty good night for us,” said BHS head coach Josh Kitchen. “But I genuinely believe we can be better than that. The girls worked really hard, and to their credit, Monte Vista kept fighting when we could have put them away. Everybody got involved for us, and we picked up the slack.”
The Pirates (3-12, 0-7 3A IML) were led by Hannah Jones, who had six points. Chevelle Garcia added five points.
BHS will travel at 5 p.m. Monday to Telluride and then will face Durango at 7 p.m. Tuesday in another road game.
Boys Basketball
Boys BasketballDurango High School boys basketball head coach Alan Batiste didn’t have much to say after his team’s 51-17 loss to Montrose on Friday night at Montrose High School.
“In all honestly, we didn’t come out ready to play, plain and simple,” Batiste said. “The scoreboard says it all, and for us to be a bubble team right now for the playoffs, it was a big loss. But hopefully we’ll be ready to play tomorrow.”
